LAHORE: Provincial Finance Minister Syed Yaqub Shah yesterday presented the first budget of the Pakistan Western Railways, showing an estimated surplus of Rs10.55 crores for the year 1962-63. Out of the surplus, Rs4.72 crores would be paid to the Central Government as return on their investment in the Railways. Of the balance Rs5.83 crores, a sum of Rs75 lakhs would be credited to the improvement fund. This would be in addition to an estimated amount of Rs1.02 crore realised as development surcharge on passenger traffic.

The budget, which has for the first time been prepared by the Provincial Government as a result of provincialisation of the Railways, bears an all-round increase in income and expenditure as compared to last year’s revised estimates. For the year 1962-63, the total revenue receipts are estimated at Rs47.26 crores and expenditure at Rs36.71 crores.

‘Veiled threat’ rebuffed

MURREE: External Affairs Minister Mohammed Ali said here yesterday that Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s statement that “any conflict on Kashmir would not be confined to the State” is a veiled threat to Pakistan, but Pakistan will not be cowed down by it.

Mr Ali aid that Mr Nehru’s offer indicated that he had a short memory, and had conveniently forgotten all that has been said by the United Nations in this regard.—Agencies
