HRCP condemns raids by FBI

QUETTA, Dec 13: The chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Afrasiab Khattak, on Friday strongly opposed the American Federal Bureau of Investigation’s raids in Balochistan and other areas for arresting the citizens without completing legal procedures.

Speaking to newsmen at Quetta Press Club, he said the way adopted by the FBI for the arrest of people was in violation of human rights and condemnable.

He said the FBI must follow the legal procedure and honour the human rights.

He said President Gen Pervez Musharraf had no right to introduce any amendment to the Constitution as parliament could do so with a two-thirds majority.

He said the HRCP was conducting a survey in Balochistan regarding honour killing and a seminar would be held in Nasirabad, where a large number of such cases occurred, to create awareness about it.

He said a fact-finding team of the commission would visit Nasirabad and Kachhi districts to ascertain the causes of tribal disputes and honour killings.

Mr Khattak observed that the common people were very badly affected by the tribal disputes and the involvement of different governments in them could not be ruled out. He alleged that the governments had pitted tribes against each other to prolong their rule.

He said an HRCP team would visit Mehargarh to get information about the dispute between the Rinds and Raisanis and meet elders of the tribes.

He said serious efforts should be made for resolving the tribal disputes.

The HRCP chairman condemned the role of Frontier Corps in the province and said that its arrogant attitude was causing unrest in several areas.

He demanded that local people should be recruited in the force as they were aware of the traditions.

Earlier, speaking to the Balochistan High Court Bar Association members, he lauded the role of lawyers for the restoration of democracy and Constitution.

He said the Constitution had been defamed by undemocratic amendments made by the military rulers.
