LAHORE, Dec 13: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi on Friday constituted a commission to look into the controversy surrounding the boards of governors on autonomous hospitals and educational institutions in the province.

Headed by former chief justice Ghulam Mujaddad Mirza, the commission will present its recommendations to the CM in two weeks time after hearing all the stakeholders, says an official announcement released after a Joint Action Committee team representing doctors and teachers had a meeting with Mr Elahi.

The BoGs have been stopped from taking any action against doctors or teachers during the next two weeks.

The chief minister asked the authorities to implement the ban on the sale of the government property in autonomous institutions, ensure job security to teachers and bring down the fees. He sought compliance report “at the earliest.”

The JAC leaders, however, claimed that the chief minister had suspended administrative powers of all the BoGs and reinstated seven teachers and a doctor sacked last month.

Addressing a press conference, they said the commission would comprise two MPAs, three representatives of the Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association and an education department official.

“While the CM is likely to nominate the MPAs on Saturday, the PPLA will be represented by Nazim Hasnain, Muhammad Arif and Majid Wazir.”

Justice Mirza, according to them, will also head five sub-committees formed to see issues related to health, Tevta, colleges, schools and student unions.

The teachers and doctors who have been “reinstated with immediate effect” are: Nazim Hasnain, Majid Wazir, Muhammad Arif, Raja Mahboob, Hafiz Abdul Khaliq Nadeem, Muhammad Ijtiba, Noorul Haq and Prof Dr Yasmin Rashid.

The JAC leaders announced an end to their six-month protest campaign. “The CM has assured us that no educational institution will be handed over to NGOs, the Model University Ordinance promulgated by the federal government will not be implemented in any university in the Punjab, the government will consult all stakeholders to formulate better strategies to introduce reforms to universities in the province.”

The JAC was represented by Nazim Hasnain, Mohammed Arif, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Prof Abdul Khaliq Nadeem, Naveed Anwer, Prof Dr Haris Rasheed, Prof Zaheeruddin, Mohammed Tariq, Muhammad Azam Butt. Punjab home secretary and principal secretary to the CM were also present in the meeting held at the CM Secretariat.

The members of the five sub-committees constituted to discuss the disputed issued are:

HEALTH: KEMC PEO Prof Mumtaz Hasan, PPSC member Prof Hamayun Maqsood, PMA president Prof Yasmin Rashid, former KEMC principal Khawaja Sadiq Hussain, Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Ahmed and Prof Muhammad Iqbal.
