KARACHI, Dec 13: The Managing Director of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has claimed that illegal water connections along Lyari River and the adjoining areas were the cause of the acute water shortage in certain areas of Lyari town.

His remarks came as an explanation sought by the provincial Chief Secretary, K. B. Rind, who had taken a serious notice of water shortage in Moosa Lane and other localities of Lyari.

The MD has assured the chief secretary that the problem would be resolved in a few days and normal water supply to Moosa Lane, Bhutto House, Baitul Hashmi, Haji Saleh Building, Irshad Manzil and Zeeshan Arcade.

As the CS directed the KWSB official to solve the problem on priority basis, an officer has been deputed for the purpose. The deputy secretary (staff) to the CS has been acting as coordination officer in the matter.

Mr Rind has also issued directives for the early completion of the widening and repair work at the Korangi-Hino Chow-rangi section of the Korangi Road.

A delegation of Landhi and Korangi residents, led by Zamir Ahmad, had called on the CS and complained that due to the inordinate delay in the completion of work, traffic jams, accidents and crimes persisted in the alternative route areas.

The delegation also expressed concern over encroachments at the intersection of Farooq-i-Azam Road and Abdul Qadir Jilani Road and said that the local administration’s failure to remove the encroachments had led to an increase in accidents and traffic mess. The CS has directed the administration to clear the roads of the encroachments.

He assured the delegation that any slackness in this regard would not be tolerated. — PPI
