CHAKWAL, June 1: At a time when the incidents of brutalities perpetrated allegedly by the police personnel have become a routine matter in Punjab, the police chief of the province admits there are no adequate resources to end the “thana culture”.

Talking to mediapersons in Chakwal on Friday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Haji Habibur Rahman said, “There is an urgent need to change the notorious culture but for that we do not have proper resources”.

However, he claimed that within limited resources, efforts were being made to change it. He emphasised the need of inculcating qualities like honesty and integrity among the cops.

“I expect from the police personnel to deal with the problems of the people as if they were their own issues,” the police chief said and warned that dishonest and corrupt personnel would face the music.

“Utmost efforts are being made to bridge the widening gap between police and public”, he maintained.

Appreciating the steps taken by the Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif to improve performance of the police, the IGP said the chief minister had given him authority to post and transfer officers without caring about any political pressure.

He said that raids were being conducted to arrest the proclaimed offenders who were involved in committing heinous crimes.

Commenting on the performance and problems of the district police, Habibur Rahman said the crimes were under control in the district.

He also announced to promote a Sub-inspector (SI) Raja Javed Anwar to the rank of Inspector as reward. The promoted Inspector was appointed as acting DSP Talagang.

On the other hand, an Inspector named Mushtaq Ahmad had to face the wrath of the IGP as he was demoted to the post of SI. Mushtaq was accused of facilitating a constable in rape case. “He would be dismissed soon as action is under way against him”, District Police Officer (DPO) Kashif Mushtaq Kanju explained.
