THE National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh warning for torrential rains in the forthcoming monsoon season which may give rise to floods.
In a report (May 16), the authority declared 29 districts vulnerable. May we now ask our government as to what measures have been taken to prevent a repeat of the 2010 disaster?
Or is it that we are waiting for a calamity to hit and blame it on foreign powers, our sins or misleading beliefs or on any other conspiracy being contrived against us on world level?
It is completely pointless to expect from our electronic media to bring the matter in the spotlight in their useless talk shows which almost exclusively focus on political drama rather than addressing genuine issues of public interest and concern.

Food banks
COMING monsoons can harm cultivation and increase people’s miseries. However, as various welfare organisations and NGOs, along with government and foreign donors, are expected to take part in helping flood-hit people, here are some tips: First, they must make contingency plans before rains and floods hit the people.
A food bank should be created with the help of our industrialists and business communities, along with Non-Governmental Organisations and other international welfare agencies, including the World Food Organisation, Unicef, and United Nations Development Programme, etc.
Food banks should be built district-wise in Pakistan with the help of the government.
