LAHORE, Dec 11: All provincial laws will be available on the Internet as the Punjab government is launching a website for the purpose.

Punjab Assembly secretary Dr Abul Hasan Najmi made this announcement while explaining the legislative procedure to the women MPAs and MNAs elected from the province here on Wednesday. The lecture had been arranged by the Aurat Foundation for educating the newly-elected parliamentarians.

Dr Najmi said the website, equipped with a search facility, would be operative within a couple of months.

He said the website would be updated regularly. The laws would also be made available on CDs on a no-profit-no-loss basis, he added.

He said the parliamentarians had to see to it that the already enacted laws were implemented properly. “Enacting new laws is not as essential as implementing the earlier ones.”

He said theory of the rule of law had changed and now legislation must be public welfare oriented.

He told them that unlike their British counterparts, legislators in Pakistan were not absolutely free to frame laws of their choice and they had to do so within the framework of the Constitution and the Quran and Sunnat. Moreover, legislation could also be challenged in courts.

Dr Najmi also answered questions about the procedure of legislation.

Earlier, Nigar Ahmad and other staff of Aurat Foundation briefed the audience about the organization’s centres and projects for educating the womenfolk on various issues concerning them.

Prominent among those who attended the workshop were former Punjab minister for social welfare Shaheen Atiqur Rahman, Begum Mehnaz Rafi, Bushra Rahman, Memona Hashmi, Neelam Shah, Samina Khalid Ghurki, Kushmala Tariq, Humaira Shahid, Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan and Saba Sadiq.
