ISLAMABAD, May 9: The Supreme Court office dispatched on Wednesday the certified copies of Tuesday’s detailed verdict explaining the reasons behind Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s conviction in the contempt case to 14 top offices in the country.

The copies were sent to President Asif Ali Zardari through his Secretary General Salman Farooqi, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Khusnood Akhtar Lashari, Senate Chairman Nayyar Bokhari, Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza, National Accountability Bureau Chairman Admiral (retd) Fasih Bukhari, Attorney General Irfan Qadir, Law Secretary Yasmin Abbasy, Secretary of the Election Commission, Cabinet Division Secretary Nargis Sethi and the registrars of all five high courts.

This time the court letter only said the copies of detailed judgment had been sent “for their information and necessary action”, apparently to avoid a controversy sparked by an earlier letter sent to the National Assembly speaker in which the expression “for compliance” had been used.

Law Minister Farooq H. Naek had objected to the word “for compliance” in the letter written by the court’s assistant registrar (implementation) and threatened to move a privilege motion against the officer.

Supreme Court Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain had to issue a clarification which explained that all court orders, without any exception, were forwarded to the authorities/departments concerned for implementation and compliance and that it was in line with the Supreme Court Rules 1980 and there was nothing irregular or improper in following this procedure.
