TOBA TEK SINGH, Dec 9: The district council demanded on Tuesday immediate suspension of Nawan Lahore police SHO and its staff involved in torture on a Faisalabad college lecturer and his family.
Through a unanimously adopted resolution, the meeting also demanded judicial probe into the incident. Through another resolution, it expressed concern over the shortage of irrigation water and demanded early construction of Kalabagh dam to meet the water crisis.
The meeting condemned the writing of an article by a woman journalist of Nigeria which was blasphemous and also condemned the killing of more than 200 Muslims in Nigeria who were protesting over the issue.
The meeting also discussed the issue of levy of taxes on private schools by the district council and the house convener presented the matter to education standing council of the house for consideration.
The district Nazim told the participants to check the performance of the government schools of their areas to enhance the teaching standard.

ESCAPE: A proclaimed offender managed to escape on Tuesday after firing on a police party which had raided Chak 419-JB to arrest him.
Police had information that PO Umar Hayat alias Jafar, who was wanted by police in various cases, was hiding there. As soon as the accused saw the police party, he started firing on it. Police returned the fire but the accused fled from the scene.
SUSPENSION: Irrigation department authorities on Tuesday suspended from service Janiwala canal office sub-engineer Rana Aslam on various charges.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Irrigation Employees Union (CBA) central deputy secretary Allah Bakhsh Sial expressed concern over the suspension of staff without holding inquiry against them.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Sial said six months ago another sub-engineer was suspended while nine officials, including an SDO and a sub-engineer, were suspended in the same sub-division during last year.
He said such steps created unrest among the workers which hampered their working. He claimed that influential farmers often forcibly create breaches in canals which junior cadre staff could not control.
He demanded immediate reinstatement of the suspended staff.
