Finding the right talent, honing it and introducing it to the world at large through a credible platform isn’t easy.
Last year, musician and producer Louis ‘Gumby’ Pinto along with Omran Shafique selected six new, unique acts and produced a song and a music video by each of them. We see the artistes as they enter the studio for the first time and within the span of an episode we see them grow and evolve into confident musicians with an educated approach to music. Zeeshan Parwez documented this journey as the director and shot them in a candid manner—revealing the quirks in each of his subjects’ personality with easy humour.
The journey began last year and now the first episode of the second season of Ufone Uth Records remembers the good times from season one in flashes. We’re taken back to the time when Faraz Anwar was featured alongside Jumbo Jutt in their eponymously titled song; Yasir and Jawad (and Wali) introduced the nation to Ghani Khan’s poignant poetry in Reidi Gul; Ali Noor was called in to sing to Usman Riaz’s song Hum Tum; Taha Malik coproduced Natasha Ejaz’s song The right way to fall all the way from Houston; Kamran Zafar (bass) and Irfan (table) were featured on Ather Sani’s mellow number, Janey Kyon and Ramlaal introduced us to their fun song, Naughty Boy.
Season two promises to be different in the sense that, according to the director, it has been shot differently. They’ve experimented aesthetically and all of the artistes have been shot in cinemascope. With three of season one’s artistes topping the charts in 2011, one looks forward to what will unveil in the upcoming episodes.
