KARACHI, Oct 9: A division bench of the Sindh High Court reserved on Tuesday judgment in appeals of two appellants who were given death sentence in Tando Bahawal murder case. The bench consisted of Justice S. A. Rabbani and Justice Faiz Mohammed Qureshi.

Ghulam Nabi Pathan and Mushtaq had filed appeals against the death sentence awarded to them by the trial court in the incident which took place on June 5, 1992.

Nine villagers were killed, and they were described as Indian agents. Press reports proved that it was not true. Father of one of the appellants, Ghulam Nabi Pathan, Ghulam Mohiuddin, died in custody.

The nine villagers who were killed in the incident were Bahadur Chandio, Manthar Chandio, Kando Khaskheli, Javed Khaskheli, Ghulam Mustafa Brohi, Dhani Bakhsh Brohi, Shafi Mohammed, Hamlo Kohli and Haji Karam.

Major Arshad Jameel was also awarded death sentence by a Field Court Martial, and 14 other army personnel were given life sentence.

NOTICE TO MD PTV: The Sindh High Court issued on Tuesday notice to the managing director of the Pakistan Television to appear in the court on Oct 16 on a petition filed by 12 production houses praying to declare cancellation of a contract awarded by PTV illegal, adds PPI.

A division bench, comprising Justice Sabeehuddin Ahmed and Justice S. Ali Aslam Jaffery, also directed PTV to maintain status quo till the next date.

It was the contention of the petitioners’ counsel that on Jan 19 PTV, through advertisement in newspapers, invited tenders for sale of time at Channel 3. The petitioners formed a consortium and, through a contract, bought seven hours’ time in a day for Rs170 million. However, PTV, after three months, reduced this time to five hours and later cancelled the contract.

The petitioners prayed the court to declare the act illegal and without jurisdiction, and also prayed to restrain the respondent from allotting this contract to any other party.
