Cracks in GNA paving way for PPP

Published December 1, 2002

KARACHI, Nov 30: Amid the rapidly changing political scenario, and delay in the convening of the new Sindh Assembly’s inaugural session, chances of the People’s Party Parliamentarians have improved due to visible difference within the pro-government Grand National Alliance over the candidate for the top slot.

According to sources, pro-and anti-Arbab Rahim groups have separately contacted the PPP leadership, after becoming restive over stiff opposition to Dr Rahim from PML (F) chief Pir Pagara.

Instead of enticing the PPP’s probable turncoats, the government move has worked the other way round and has instead resulted in cracks within the GNA.

PPP sources confirmed that PML (Q) and SDA leaders had separately contacted the party leadership with a view to evolving a coalition in the province.

Imtiaz Shaikh, according to sources, has contacted the provincial parliamentary party leader of the PPP, Nisar Khuhro, and has assured him of support.

At the same time, however, the National Alliance chief, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, is expected to meet Pir Pagara in a bid to convince him on his candidate, Arbab Rahim.

According to the sources, a meeting between Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi is also expected.

On the other hand, PML (Q) Sindh chief and federal minister Ghous Bakhsh Maher has also confirmed contacts with top PPP leaders. According to the sources, they have also contacted Makhdoom Amin Fahim and his son and aspirant for the top slot in Sindh Makhdoom Jameeluzzaman. Mr Maher has also met Mr Jatoi to seek his blessings.

At the same time, the PPP and the PML (F) are waiting on the fence and for the dust to settle to make their understanding or lack of it public.

In view of the evolving cooperation between the ruling PML (Q) and the MMA in Balochistan and at the centre, each player in the power game in Sindh is trying to find a credible counterbalance to sustain the government.

The political situation in Sindh would become more clear after Eid and when the outcome of the government’s efforts to win back the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s support would come to the surface.
