KARACHI, Nov 30: The inspector-general of the Sindh police, Syed Kamal Shah, has ordered suspension of the SHO Mochko and the SHO ACLC (Anti-Car Lifting Cell) Sharifabad with immediate effect and instituted an inquiry against them to report within three days.

The orders have been issued on reports that Abdus Samad, son of Khuda Bakhsh, died in police custody on Nov 29. Tariq, son of Hanif, died in the custody of the ACLC Sharifabad on Nov 28. Deaths in both the cases have been shown to be suicide.

A press release stated that legal action would be taken against the entire staff concerned besides the SHOs if postmortem reports did not prove the deaths as suicide.

The IG asked policemen to be polite to the public on the occasion of Eid. Complaints of extortion (Eidi) if received against any policeman, he would be suspended immediately. Police have also been warned of legal action in case they ask for marriage certificates from couples at recreation spots.

The IG has taken serious notice of rising incidents of hijacking of cars and motorcycles in Karachi, and has asked the Capital City Police Officer to prepare a comprehensive plan to effectively check the menace.

He made these remarks on a report submitted to him by the ACLC of Karachi Capital City Police informing him of measures adopted so far and the future strategy and performance of the ACLC staff.

The report said the ACLC was utilizing voluntary services of trained volunteers having expertise in identifying tampered engines and chassis numbers of cars and motorcycles.

The ACLC plans to expand its network by imparting training to its staff to make the recovery of stolen and hijacked vehicles more effective.

It was stated in the report that the Sindh government had approved a scheme for the setting up of 27 checkposts at exit points of the city where computers with data on stolen and hijacked vehicles would be installed. — PPI
