ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: The Senior Civil Judge of Islamabad on Friday remanded Mian Khurram Rasool, former media coordinator to the prime minister, in custody to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for three days.

Officials of the agency told Dawn that Khurram Rasool was produced in court in connection with a Rs76 million fraud in awarding of quota for sugar supply.

The complaint was registered by FIA in response to a complaint by Sohail Rabani, a businessman.

The alleged fraud was committed through a bank. A number of bank officials were also involved in the crime, the FIA officials added.

The National Accountability Bureau also sought custody of Rasool in connection with another fraud case, but the judge rejected the plea. ARREST:

Khurram Rasool was arrested in the small hours of Friday in connection with a Rs765million fraud case.

Sources in the agency said the arrest was made in the FIA's headquarters when he came over to surrender before investigators.

The sources said he surrendered before the FIA after Accountability Court of Jahandad Khan Banth awarded him a four-year jail term in absentia under section 31-A of the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance for not appearing before the court.

However, a special court for banking offences in Lahore granted him interim bail hours after a division court denied him protective bail for not appearing before the court.

Later in the evening Rasool's brother came over to the FIA's headquarters and submitted the interim bail, telling them that his brother was available for investigations.

Negotiations between Rasool's brother and FIA officials lasted till early hours of Friday. The brother then informed Rasool, who later turned himself in.
