LARKANA, Jan 21: The inspector general of prisons on Saturday announced immediate release of inmates of Larkana Central Jail who have only two months of jail term left, and release of Rs400 million out of Rs1.2 billion approved for construction of new jails and repair and renovation of the rest of Sindh prisons.
IG Prisons Ghulam Qadir Thebo further said that plans were afoot to build two jails in the district, one in Qambar and the other in Kandhkot and land for which had already been acquired.
Furthermore, the Prison Department was planning to establish libraries and computer centres for the benefit of prisoners.
Talking to journalists after visiting the Central Prison Larkana, he expressed appreciation on the discipline demonstrated by the prisoners and announced remission of two month as a reward. Around 86 prisoners will benefit from this remission. Mr Thebo said that there were no more dangerous jails in the province because of the restoration of discipline among prisoners.
Public call offices will be established in 27 jails with Rs2 per minute call rates for inmates he said and asked the jail superintend to arrange for dental clinic.
Mr Thebo said that prisoners who don’t have computerised national cards would be facilitated to get their CNICs prepared while remaining in jails.
New barracks in Larkana prison will be established soon keeping in view the 610 prisoners housed against the capacity of 410, besides a boundary wall will also be constructed after getting a nod from the government, the IG Prison said.
Regarding bringing salaries of jail officials at par with their Punjab counterparts, he said proposals have been sent to the government for approval.
The IG Prisons suspended the Assistant Jail Superintendent Jawed Khuhawar on complaint of torturing a prisoner and assigned an inquiry to DIG Prison Sukkur Abdul Majeed Siddiqui Earlier, the IG along with DIG Prison Sukkur and Jail Superintendent visited the jail.
