KARACHI, Nov 28: of the 5000 privately-managed educational institutions—primary, secondary and higher secondary schools— in Sindh, only 2000 are registered and the rest are operating in violation of the registration rules and regulations.

The Sindh government promulgated an ordinance earlier this year, making it mandatory for privately-managed schools and other institutions to get registered. The government has now set December 20 as the deadline for all the schools to get registered with the registration authorities of their respective district governments. Provincial Secretary Education Nazar Hussain Mahar told PPI on Thursday that the failure to meet the deadline would result in action under the law.

“Owners of unregistered schools will be fined Rs500 per day till they get registered,” Mr Mahar said adding that such institutions might be closed down and their cases sent to the court if their owners were not willing to abide the law.

When asked about any check on exorbitant fees charged by private schools, he said the fixation of fee according to the facilities available in the schools had been left to their managements, with only condition that they would not to raise the fee during academic sessions.—PPI
