LAHORE, Jan 20: Islampura police on Friday registered cases against five women members of the Punjab Assembly for having contested the election on the basis of fake degrees.

Three MPAs belong to the PML-N and two to the PPP.

The FIRs against Safina Saima, Farah Deba, Afshan Farooq, Saima Aziz and Naseem Nasir were registered on a complaint lodged by Deputy Election Commissioner Ishtiaq Ahmad Rana.

Mr Ishtiaq has sought criminal action against the MPAs, saying the educational degrees of these lawmakers proved bogus upon verification.

City Division Investigation SP Rana Shujat Ali told Dawn that police would collect from the Election Commission office on Saturday documents relating to inquiries which reportedly proved the lawmakers had fake degrees.

He said that scrutiny of those documents would help determine the action to be taken against the lawmakers.
