Two die on road in Chitral

CHITRAL, Jan 4: Two persons died and three sustained serious injuries on Tuesday night when a vehicle of Sarhad Rural Support Programme plunged into a river in Andakhti village on Chitral-Garam Chashma road.

Police sources said that the vehicle was transporting the officials from Arkari valley to Chitral when it met the accident.

Those who died were identified as Engineer Zuhaib Ahmed and driver Ihteramul Haq. Injured Engineer Arshad Ilahi and accountant Irshad Ali were shifted to the local DHQ Hospital and later to Peshawar. —Correspondent

Cattle vaccination

KARAK, Jan 4: The livestock department has started a campaign to vaccinate cattle in the weekly fares and in villages in different areas of the district.

Officials said here on Wednesday that the campaign was launched after complaints were received from the people regarding different animal diseases in their areas.

They said that the cattle in the villages and those brought to the weekly bazaars for sale would be vaccinated against various diseases. The campaign is also aimed at educating the people about the use of cattle medicine.

They said that the livestock department had also provided free medicines to the people. —Correspondent

Clinical skill centre at KMC

PESHAWAR, Jan 4: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masud Kausar inaugurated Dr Syed Amjad Hussain Clinical Skill Centre and Laboratory at Khyber Medical College here on Wednesday.

According to an official handout, addressing the inaugural ceremony the governor praised the services and contributions of Khyber Medical College’s Alumni Association of North America in promoting KMC and arranging scholarships for its talented and deserving student.

The Clinical Skill Centre and Laboratory has been named after a Peshawar-origin doctor based at Ohio, USA. Dr Amjad Hussain, according to the handout, is a graduate of KMC who founded the alumni association in 1979 and has sponsored various educational projects at the institution. —Bureau Report

Protest against loadshedding

PESHAWAR, Jan 4: The business community of Qissa Khwani and Jangi Mohalla bazaars on Wednesday observed a sit-in on the main road outside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to register their protest against the prolonged unscheduled loadshedding and shouted anti-government slogans.

The protesters led by Zafar Khattak, president Printing and Press Association, tried to enter the provincial assembly building but they were not allowed. Peshawar DCO Siraj Ahmed met the protesters and assured them of resolving their problem.The protesters apprised the DCO of their grievances and said that their businesses had come to a standstill and they were not even able to pay the rent and utility bills.

The DCO asked them to visit his office on Thursday. —Bureau Report

Fata reforms

PESHAWAR, Jan 4: Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday demanded of the government to immediately introduce reforms in Fata and complete nullification of Frontier Crimes Regulation.

According to a press release issued here, the seminar was organised by Shed Organisation under ‘Communities for change’ project.

The seminar was attended by elders of different tribes included Haji Daud, Malik Mullakhel, Dilawar Khan and others.

The speakers termed FCR as a black law and demanded of the government to stop army operation in Bara, which, they said, had displaced thousands of people and they were living a miserable life in the IDP camps. They said that the military operation had also affected their business and trade.

At the end, a speech competition was held among the students from Bara. —Bureau Report

Assumes charge

PESHAWAR, Jan 4: The recently appointed joint provincial election commissioner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Tanvir Zia Butt, has assumed the charge of his post here on Wednesday.

According to a press release issued here, prior to his promotion, Mr Butt was performing the duties of deputy election commissioner, Rawalpindi.

A few days ago, the Election Commission promoted him as joint provincial election commissioner, KP. He is an experienced and qualified officer who has also represented Pakistan under UN charter in various countries during the elections. —Bureau Report
