KARACHI, Nov 25: Begum Khadija Soomro, wife of Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro, said here on Monday Pakistan is not only one of the first signatories to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) but also one of the two countries to put forth the proposal of the CRC to the United Nations.

She expressed her pleasure at the formation of Pakistan’s first child rights club in schools of Karachi, while speaking at the launching of Madadgar’s child rights club and a seminar to celebrate the anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in a local hotel.

The Chairperson of the Provincial Commission of Child Welfare, Begum Khadija Soomro, stressed on the implementation of international commitments, and informed the gathering that the government was seriously considering the issues concerning children’s welfare.

She said the enforcement of the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance 2000 was an example of the government’s commitment to take care of children in difficult circumstances.

LHRLA president Zia Ahmed Awan said the need for child rights awareness in Pakistan, particularly at the school level, was important as it would develop leadership skills in children.—PPI
