KARACHI, Nov 21: Experts, working on dead fish which had accumulated at the Clifton beach on Friday night, have ruled out the possibility that mass fish fatality took place due to any radiation or toxicity in the sea.

Sources privy to the investigation said officials of the provincial environmental protection agency continued meeting representatives from research institutions, including National Institute of Oceanography, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, Karachi University’s marine research centres and the Maritime Security Agency.

Though some test reports are still awaited, experts so far have reached an agreement that the fish, of two to four species, did not die due to any toxicity in the wake of oil spillage or discharge of chemical substances or pesticides in the sea.

There were no reports about any nuclear waste discharge in recent months, they added.

A consensus is developing among the experts engaged to look into the death of a large number of fish that some fishing trawler or vessel had off-loaded the unwanted species of fish after a target fishing, said another source.

Sources claimed that analysis of the fish would be concluded on Friday when a report would also be sent to the federal government and the chief executive’s secretariat.

It is learnt that authorities have asked the researchers to take all precautions while disseminating their findings as any irresponsible statement by them could jeopardize the fish export.
