PESHAWAR, Nov 20: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah on Wednesday laid foundation-stone of a small dam to be completed at a cost of Rs40 million in the Kohe Daman area, some 35 kilometres southeast of here.

The project, falling in the limits of Town-IV of the City District Peshawar, on completion would irrigate more than 3,000 acres in the catchment area.

With the construction of 60 feet high and 1,525 feet long dam, having six kilometres long water channels with the discharge capacity of 15 cusecs, would have 3,000 acre feet storage capacity.

Moreover, the project also includes the construction of a spell way to make possible the discharge of additional water during flood season.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the governor said that unlike the past when the new government shelved the development projects initiated by the previous government, the policies introduced by this government would continue in the future as well.

This practice, he said, devoid the people of the benefits of the development projects and resulted in spoiling of national resources.

Referring to the projects of small dams, the governor said that as the province had vast potentials of construction of small dams, the government established a separate organization to explore the possibilities for launching new projects and also ensure their implementation.

NEW COLLEGE OPENED: Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has said that the provincial government, which has to rely on the provision of 90 per cent of its budgetary resources from the federal government, is spending more than one fourth of its total budget on education.
