KARACHI, Nov 17: The Revenue Department of District Government in its ongoing drive against profiteers sent 93 shopkeepers, hawkers and vendors behind the bars.

A total of 267 were charge-sheeted and prosecuted for indulging in profiteering, according to official sources.

The department also recovered more than Rs292,000 as fine from the profiteers on Sunday making the total of fine money to Rs500,000 recovered from 208 culprits sent to jail in the last two days, the sources said.

The DDO of SITE, recovered Rs3,500 as fine from five jailed shopkeepers while the DDO of Baldia charge-sheeted 33 shopkeepers and recovered Rs30,500 fine sending 16 profiteers to jail.

The DDO of Gulberg charge-sheeted 18 shopkeepers, sent 10 to jail and recovered Rs25,500 as fine whereas the DDO of Nazimabad booked six shopkeepers, sent five of them to jail and recovered a total of Rs12,500 as fine.

The DDO of Liaqatabad charge-sheeted 16 profiteers, sent 109 behind the bars and recovered Rs28,650 as fine.

The DDO of North Karachi charge-sheeted 19 profiteers and recovered Rs9,800 as fine whereas the DDO of Keamari charge-sheeted five profiteers, recovered Rs19,500 fine and sent five profiteers to jail.

Meanwhile, the DCO of Karachi held separate meetings with DDOs and directed them to exercise their judicial powers in curbing the menace of profiteering in order to ensure availability of the items of daily use at reasonable prices during the holy month of Ramazan. — APP
