LARKANA, Nov 15: Police remain clueless regarding the whereabouts of the culprits involved in the burglary at the Moenjodaro Museum even after five months.
It may be recalled that on May 10, 41 seals and artefacts had been stolen from the museum. Investigation confirmed that three men — Aijaz Tunio, Mumtaz Brohi, and Ali Dost Brohi — had been involved in the theft.
The supervisor, investigation, Mohammed Paryial Morio, while talking to this correspondent from Dokri on Friday, said that the culprits had taken refuge in Mandgola, a town of Balochistan close to the border of Iran.
He said that the director general, Archaeology, Pakis-tan, had been asked to write to the vice chancellor of Meh-ran University of Engineer-ing and Technology, Jamshoro, for handing over Mohammed Afzal Brohi, who was assistant professor architect at the university.
He said, “We suspect Afzal Brohi and his friend, Thomas Urban, who belongs to the UK, had engineered the robbery during their visit to Moenjodaro in connection with attending a UNESCO-sponsored International Conference at the site, which was held in April.”
A police officer told this correspondent on Friday that Afzal Brohi had also stayed at Moenjodaro as Assistant Director of the Moenjodaro Conservation Cell (MCC) during 1996-97, and is presently in the UK in connection with his PhD assignment.
He disputed the allegations of Nazims regarding the culprits’ names being dropped from the inquiry.
He said that South Bees, a private entrepreneur in the UK and trusty in the US dealing in the sale and purchase of artic-les of archaeological importance, had been approached officially.
They were asked not to purchase the articles stolen from the Museum of Moenjodaro as they were the property of the Government of Pakistan and inform it if someone tried to sell the stolen articles.
The names of the culprits have been included in the Exit Control List (ECL).
The interior ministry of the UAE had requested Pakistan for including the names of the culprits in the ECL, the investigation officer said.
The passport office, Larkana, had been strictly asked not to issue passports to Aijaz Tunio, Mumtaz Brohi, and Ali Dost Brohi, and in case they approached it, the police should be informed immediately.
The investigation officer claimed that fresh efforts would be made to recover the stolen seals as the culprits had been located.
