KARACHI, Nov 13: The vice-chancellor, University of Karachi, Dr Zafar Saied Saify, on Wednesday inaugurated a computer network at the University, which has recently been developed by the Department of Computer Science and Siemens Pakistan in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Dr Saify praised the Ministry for providing the grant for development of Information Technology at the University.

He said the University would need trained IT personnel in future to support its research institutes.

The research institutes include Umair Basha Institute of Information Technology, A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Dr Panjwani Institute of Molecular Medicine and Drug Development, Third World Institute of Chemical Sciences, and Dr Feroz Institute of Mass Communication.

Dr Aqil Burney, who is looking after the Computer Science Department, said the focus was now on research and development. On receipt of the grant from the ministry, he said, highly qualified teaching staff had been appointed.

It was stated that Salman Bukhtiari, a network expert, has shown the potential of network which supports video conferencing, internet facilities, virtual library facilities and internal telephone facilities with 326 modes and 20 switches to support the communication at the net.

Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr Raunaq Raza, urged the students to concentrate on research and development as a number of qualified teachers have been hired.

DIPLOMA ADMISSION: The University of Karachi has announced that the process of admission to postgraduate diploma in statistics will begin on Nov 25 with issuance of admission forms from the Department of Statistics.

Last date for submission of the forms is Dec 14. Admissions will be granted on merit and the list of successful candidates will be displayed at the department on Dec 20. Fee will be accepted between Dec 21 and 28 and classes will begin on Jan 1.

BDS EXAMS: Karachi University has notified that exam forms and fees for final professional BDS supplementary examinations will be received up to Nov 19. The prescribed fee for the exam is Rs1,550 and sports fee is Rs50.

RESERVED SEATS: Admissions on reserved seats for sports at the University will be finalized after the announcement of Master’s and honours’ merit lists.

This was announced by KU Director of Admissions, Prof Mohammad Ishaq, on Wednesday.

He said detail of admissions on sports can be obtained from the office of the Deputy Registrar (Academic) and that the form can be submitted by Nov 21.—PPI/APP
