KALAYA: A man was killed and six people, including three government officials, were injured when militants fired rockets at a compound in Kalaya, the main town of Orakzai Agency, during a visit by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar.

Officials said the militants appeared to be trying to disrupt the governor's visit to the agency. Two rockets were fired from a hill in Shireen Dara when a helicopter carrying the governor and senior officers landed at the helipad.

Witnesses said the rockets missed the helipad and landed in nearby fields. A few minutes later another rocket landed near the compound where a jirga and a briefing had been arranged.

“The governor was in the retiring room when the rocket exploded,” said an official.

The blast injured Abdul Khaliq, Deputy Director of Fata Monitoring Cell; Imran Khan, Deputy Director of Livestock; and Dr Nawab Ali, Coordinator of National Health Programme; and two security personnel.

Another rocket hit the nearby house of a tribesman Niaz Badshah, killing his son and injuring his daughter.

Governor Kausar addressed the jirga and attended the briefing on development activities and security situation in the agency.

No militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, till late in the evening.
