BAHAWALPUR, Nov 10: The prevailing political deadlock in the formation of governments in the centre and provinces has adversely affected the functioning of the district government system here.

The head of the Bahawalpur district government, Chaudhry Tariq Cheema, is a PPP leader and active in his party affairs in Lahore and Islamabad. In his absence, most of the government affairs are lying pending and the applicants are suffering. Usually a place of hustle and bustle, his office is now presenting a deserted look.

However, the people particularly the job seekers throng the residence of Mr Cheema whenever he visits Bahawalpur. After the Oct 10 elections, the district Nazim has to spend most of his time either in Lahore or Islamabad so that he may be readily available for consultation with his party stalwarts.

MINISTER: The cotton producing districts in the province will be declared as areas free from contamination during the next Kharif season.

This was stated by Punjab Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Khursheeduz Zaman Qureshi while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of cotton ginning at a factory here on Sunday.

He pointed out that the government scheme of cotton free from contamination was already giving good results in the two districts of Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur. The expansion of this scheme, he said, was essential to treat Pakistani cotton as grade A instead of B in the international market.

Earlier, local Cotton Ginners Association president Malik Nazim Hussain Awan assured that local ginners would fully cooperate with the government to make the campaign of cotton free from contamination a complete success.
