HYDERABAD, Nov 10: Responding to the complaints about the collapse of the sewerage system and resultant accumulation of sewage at Hyder Chowk, Station Road, and Sarfaraz Chari, the managing director, Wasa, has clarified that sewage accumulated at Hyder Chowk due to overloading of the existing 18inch sewer, which has been laid along Risala Road.
He said that with the passage of time a number of drains have been connected to this sewer instead of connecting them to the Nullah along the Station Road with the result that it overflows too frequently and causes inundation at Hyder Chowk.
He said the recently-constructed girder crossing on Sher Singh Road was also causing seepage of sewage and its accumulation at Hyder Chowk because of its improper construction where a lot of holes have been left unplugged during the construction work.
He said that both drains along the Sher Singh Road should have been connected to the Station Road Nullah for ultimate disposal whereas it has been connected to the 18inch sewer causing accumulation.
About Sarfaraz Chari, he said that the twin drains along the Sarfaraz Chari remain mostly choked thereby causing overflow of sewage and ultimately sewage accumulates on Sarfaraz Chowk, which is the lowest point and where the HDA’s sewer exists.
He said that the present sewage accumulation on Sarfaraz Chowk was on account of unattended/damaged drains coming from the Bin Tayyab Hospital of the Taluka Municipal Administration city.
About Station Road, the MD, Wasa, said that lacs of rupees had been spent on the construction of the RCC Road in front of Maula Ali Qadamgah whereas no outlet had been provided by the TMA city for disposal of sewage from the surrounding areas with the result that drains often overflowed and sewage accumulated on the Station Road and Maula Ali Qadamgah.
He said the duality of the sewage disposal system comprising drains and sewers is the real cause of frequent complaints regarding sewage accumulation on various roads of the city whereas sewers happen to co-exist with drains.
He clarified the decades old street drains are connected to the main drains and dirty water is ultimately disposed of into the Nullahs which in turn fall into the Phulelli Canal. All the TMA city drains/Nullahs which remain choked due to lack of proper and regular desilting have been connected to Wasa sewers in the city area with the result that frequent overflowing of the sewers occur on account of their overloading.
He argued that the sewers were meant to take a certain load of sewage from a fixed drain/main drain and disposed of into the dump well of the nearby sewage disposal pumping station.
He said that extra loading of sewers by connecting them to various choked drains illegally on part of the defunct HMC was resulting in frequent sewage overflowing and its accumulation on the roads thereby creating a bad name for the institution.
