US fears backlash over Kasi execution

Published November 8, 2002

WASHINGTON, Nov 7: The US government has warned Americans that the approaching execution of Mir Aimal Kasi may trigger new terrorist attacks against US interests overseas.

Kasi, a Pakistani national, was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by a US court in 1997 for killing two CIA employees.

Frank Darling and Lansing Bennet were shot dead on Jan 25, 1993 outside the agency’s headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

Kasi is scheduled to die by lethal injection in a Virginia prison on next Thursday.

In a worldwide caution, the US State Department said on Wednesday that the planned execution has created danger for retaliatory acts against the US or its foreign interests. It alerted US citizens to remain vigilant against any terrorist actions that may target civilians, till May 7, 2003.

The departments says that the US government facilities worldwide would remain at a heightened state of alert and may temporarily close or suspend public services from time to time to review their security posture and ensure their adequacy.
