ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza has summoned on Sept 6 a meeting of the special committee of the house constituted to review and monitor the law and order situation in Karachi and Quetta.

According to an official announcement on Tuesday, the meeting has been convened by the speaker for election of its chairman.

The speaker had constituted the committee on Sunday to review and monitor the law and order situation in Karachi and Quetta in line with the motion adopted by the lower house after a nine-day heated debate.

The committee has been mandated to look into the law and order situation in Karachi and Balochistan and report back to the house with recommendations within two months.

The committee comprises Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Noor Alam Khan, Dr Ayatullah Durrani and Abdul Qadir Patel of the PPP; Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan, Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Zahid Hamid and Rana Tanvir Hussain of PML-N; Ghous Bux Khan Mahar, Riaz Hussain Pirzada and Zubaida Jalal of PML-Q; Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi and Khwaja Sohail Mansoor of MQM; Ghulam Ahmad Bilour of ANP; Maulana Fazlur Rehman of JUI-F and Khuda Bux Rajar of PML-Functional.

Sources said that Mr Kaira and Mr Khurshid Shah were main contenders for the office of the chairman of the committee.
