FAISALABAD, Nov 6: Goods transporters and oil-tanker owners observed a complete strike here on Wednesday while the Gujranwala truckers called off their strike after a meeting with the Punjab governor.

The Faisalabad transporters kept their vehicles off road in protest against the imposition of new income tax on them. They also held a protest meeting at the Lal Mills Chowk and urged the Punjab governor to withdraw new taxes imposed on them.

They said they were threatened with dire consequences by the government officials when they complained against their attitude.

They threatened that they would stage demonstrations after Ramazan if the government failed to accept their demands.

GUJRANWALA: The Gujranwala Goods Transporters Association called off their strike after an assurance by the government of acceptance of their genuine demands.

Association president Chaudhry Abdul Qayyum and office-bearers met the Punjab governor in Lahore on Wednesday in the presence of inspector-general of police, home secretary, chief secretary, traffic DIG and SSP.

Mr Qayyum said the governor directed police to adopt solid steps to ensure safety to truckers on national highways.

He also assured truckers that levy of income tax on 10 years old trucks would be withdrawn besides abolishing professional tax. He said a truck stand would be constructed in Gujranwala.

Later, the goods transporters called off their strike and informed transporters by phone throughout the division.
