KARACHI: Top swimmers of the city will be seen in action in the second Karachi Open Swimming Championship being held at the Sailing Club Boat Basin on Sept 18, organisers announced here on Sunday.

Besides the open category, boys will be competing in under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years contest and girls will be taking part in 8, 10 and 12 years age group.

“The basic objective of holding Karachi Open, boys and girls events was to provide the swimmers more competition and exposure,” chief organiser and former national swimmer, Javed Taqi told APP.

He said Karachi is having abundant talent and holding of the championship will help them raise the standard of their game for upcoming events at national and international level.

“After grand success of last year we are expecting around 250 swimmers this year,” he said, adding that overall 65 events will be staged during the course of the championship.

He said 50-metre, 100-metre, 200-metre events in free style, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke will be conducted with 200-metre individual medley.

He said the special feature of this year event is that the best swimmer of the competition will be awarded the Kamal Masud trophy.

Javed Taqi said Karachi championship is being staged with the approval from the Sindh Swimming Association.

International Mazhar Naqvi, who had represented Pakistan in Commonwealth Swimming Championship in New Delhi and World Swimming Championship will be the main attraction.

Mazhar won as many as eight gold medals in different events of the Karachi Open last year.

Other prominent swimmers to feature in the event include Faiz Khalil, Mustufa Naqvi, Hamza Khalid, Saad Amin and Danish Asfar.—APP
