ROME: Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze on Friday agreed to join Italian side Roma after leaving French side Marseille where he had spent two seasons.

The 33-year-old Argentine had been under contract at Marseille until 2012 but had insisted in May that he wanted to leave after falling out with officials at the French side.

Heinze was the highest-paid player at Marseille, earning over 400,000 euros a month.
