Delay in crushing season resented

MIRPURKHAS, Nov 1: Local growers have expressed resentment over the decision of the sugar mills in the district to delay the crushing of sugarcane by a month.

They said that the farmers would suffer financially in the wake of the decision.

According to reports, the district-wide cultivation of sugarcane surpassed 100,000 acres.

Sugar mill owners’ decision, they said, contradicted the fact that the crop was mature enough to be transported to the mills.

The growers said that they would be hit hard as the crop’s weight would decrease if it was not harvested on a timely basis.

The district general secretary of the Sindh Abadgar Board, Imtiaz Panhwar, said that it was a ruse to buy the sugarcane crop at lower prices.

He said that the late start of the crushing season would compel the growers to agree to the mill owners’ terms and conditions, including non-payment of transportation charges.

He stressed on the need for convening a meeting of the growers to review the situation.

WATER SUPPLY: The Nazim, Taluka Municipal Council, Mirpurkhas, Syed Inayat Ali Shah, has disclosed that the district government had approved water supply for various areas of the city at a cost of Rs12.50 million under the Khushaal Pakistan Programme Phase III, but the district government did not provide land for the purpose.

In a statement, he said that to generate funds on an emergency basis for purchasing land, the Taluka municipal administration auctioned the Khisakpura shopping centre.

While clarifying the decision of auctioning, he said that he wanted to convene a meeting of the council but it could not be held despite his best efforts.

He said that the district government warned that if the scheme was not implemented soon its funds would lapse.

He said that a committee comprising Nazims and Naib Nazims of the affected areas had been formed to purchase land for the water supply scheme.
