One killed, another takes life

ISLAMABAD, July 21: A man was gunned down, while another committed suicide in separate incidents, police said on Thursday.

Police said Hafizur Rehman, 25, was sitting outside his house when gunmen came and fired multiple shots at him.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The victim was a driver by profession of inter-provincial coach, and a native of Hangu.

He along with his family shifted to Islamabad a decade ago and settled in Soan.

A police team has been sent to Hangu to collect the details of the family, including the victim.

In another incident a man committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan at Sihala.

The victim was identified as Saleem Akhtar, 22, resident of Moza Baghan. He was labourer by profession, but in serious financial crisis for the last couple of months due to non-availability of work. — Staff Reporter

Bootlegger arrested

ISLAMABAD, July 21: Police have arrested an alleged bootlegger along with three others and recovered liquor from his home on Wednesday night.

Police said Malik Tahir was operating from the capital in connivance with some foreign missions. Kohsar police arrested Tahir from his residence in sector F-7/3.

According to police, they observed a vehicle making trips to Jinnah Super from the house. The vehicle was intercepted when it reached Jinnah Super for the third time and during search 12 bottles of wine were recovered.

The driver, who was shifted to police station, identified himself as “delivery boy”. He told the police about the wine and beer stored in the house where Malik Tahir was also present.

A police raid led to recovery of nine bottles of liquor along with 96 beer cans. Malik Tahir along with three people present in the house was arrested and a case under the Narcotics Act was registered against them.

Soon after the arrest and despite the fact that he was nominated in the case, sources said efforts by some powerful individuals were made to get Malik Tahir released. On Thursday the four accused were produced in the court and given into police custody for a day.— Staff Reporter

Attock receives downpour

ATTOCK, July 21: The heavy rain with strong wind that lashed the city on Thursday broke the long spell of hot and humid condition as the people took a sigh of relief.

However, the heavy rainstorm caused hours long power suspension and many trees and billboards were uprooted and many low-lying areas were inundated.

As the rain started at 6pm, the people particularly the children came out of their houses to enjoy the shower. Many roads and streets were submerged and it became difficult for the motorists to drive through the accumulated water. The rain also exposed the flawed drainage system at various areas of the city. The power suspension in most localities added to the problems of the people. — Correspondent

Protest against loadshedding

RAWALPINDI, July 21: The traders blocked many roads in Raja Bazaar on Thursday by burning tyres in protest against the unscheduled loadshedding which, they said, had virtually ruined their businesses.

The trader leaders warned the authorities if the unscheduled loadshedding was not stopped within seven days, all the offices of the Wapda and Iesco would be besieged that would continue till the resolution of the problem. — Online
