ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: Chief Executive Gen Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday promulgated Conduct of General Elections Order (CGEO), 2002, to bar defeated candidates of assemblies from contesting election to Senate.

The CE, through the order, inserted an article, 8AA, titled Disqualification from being member of Senate, in the CGEO, 2002, stating:

“Notwithstanding anything contained in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973, the Senate (Election) Act, 1975 (LI of 1975), the Representative of the Peoples’ Act, 1976 (LXXXV of 1976), or any other law for the time being in force, a person shall be disqualified from being elected or chosen as, and from being, a member of the Senate if, having been a candidates for election to the National Assembly or a provincial assembly at the elections held under this order, he has not been elected to such assembly.”—APP
