Shining Steel on hat trick trail

Published October 30, 2002

KARACHI, Oct 29: Shining Steel on the hat trick trail starts off as our day’s best, when the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse Wednesday.

The half bred chestnut colt owned by Shoukat Awan and trained by Taj Mohammad, made short work of the field last Wednesday going over five furlongs under jockey M. Nasir.

Contesting in the fifth race to be run over the same distance, Shining Steel should overcome another speedster Mah Sagar and Neelam Taab in a field where 16 runners will be making their appearance.

All in all, seven events have been drawn up, all to be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs.

The first race begins at 12-30 p.m.

In the opener, the four-year-old bay colt Darbari Malang is fancied to reach the winning post ahead of Miss Neutron and Lucky Love.

Last week Abr-e-Noor with veteran rider Nadir Abdullah carrying nine stones and three pounds on her back was beaten into the second spot by Royal Promise. With 15 pounds less on her back, the roan mare should get the better of Lawrence Of Arabia and Major Dandy in the next event.

Baby Tabassum a popular winner in her last outing, should register another success in the third race, closely followed home by Silent Fire and High Speed.

The chestnut gelding Great Banquet under Tahseen Hussain, finished third behind Shining Steel and Black Door Man last week, only in her second outing over here.

Great Banquet if ticking, has a great chance to pick up the spoils in the following event, with Black Magic and Superb Star joining the fray.

Two and half weeks ago, Mubashar Prince with jockey Arshad in the saddle beat Reincarnated by a short head going over five furlongs.

The seven-year-old chestnut gelding has a great chance to make it two wins in a row, racing to victory ahead of Never Band and Wonder Thunder in the sixth race of the afternoon.

The curtain should unfurl on the day’s programme, with Nihal Pervaiz’s six-year-old bay horse Wonderful Peace making it two winners in a row for the connections, with X’tasy and Show Time close on his heels.
