LAHORE, Oct 28: A review board of the Lahore High Court on Monday ordered the release of Maulana Azam Tariq after the expiry of his detention period on Oct 30.
The Maulana had been arrested during the government campaign against religious extremist groups and in jail for the last one year.
The review board rejected the Punjab government plea to extend his detention on the ground that his release could create problems.
A sizable number of Maulana’s followers were present in the court to attend the hearing. They raised slogans in favour of their leader on learning about his release orders.
The review board, comprising justices Tassaduq Husain Jilani, Raja Muhammad Sabir and Mian Najamuz Zaman, heard the case under tight security arrangements.
