KARACHI, Oct 26: The three-year-old bay colt The Speed Star with four straight wins under his belt, is fancied to lift the Colts & Fillies Trials Cup at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting which gets under way Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.
The half bred colt partnered twice by jockey Jillani and his younger brother Abdul Rahim on the other two winning occasions winning his last four outings with plenty to spare.
All in all, eight events have been drawn up on the racing card. The first five will be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs and the last two will be run over six.
The first race begins at 12 noon.
Our day’s best however is the bay four-year-old filly Shab-e-Noor, from trainer Taj Mohammad’s yard. In a big field of 16 runners going over six furlongs in the seventh race, Shab-e-Noor should be followed home by Welcome Shahtab, a chicken in the weights and heavyweight The Champion Strides.
The chestnut colt Rocket Fuel is on song to register his fifth consecutive victory in the fifth event going over five furlongs, with Sapno Ki Rani and X-Tasy constant thorns in his side throughout the race.
Golden Voice, an impressive winner on Wednesday afternoon under jockey Arshad, should gallop home to another victory in the third race. But the bay gelding will have to work up a sweat in overcoming the likes of Delta Song and Neelam Taab in the third event.
In the opener with 18 runners in contention, Sweet Grandy should make amends for her last outing and pass the winning post ahead of Superb Star and Sarafan.
Charmastic Eyes tracking well in the morning exercises could win the next race from top weight Classic Beauty and Gold Money, with Evershine, another entry from Taj Mohammad’s yard, picking up the spoils from Wonder Thunder and Mickey Mickado II in the fourth race.
The last event on the programme has 11 highly bred horses contesting over six furlongs. Although burdened to carry a heavy weight of 10 stones and 10 pounds on his back, last year’s champion colt Steal The Show has the class to win this race, chased all the way over the six furlong journey by Al Ashia and Lover’s Lady.
