HYDERABAD, Oct 26: Thari protesters on Saturday threatened to stage a hunger strike unto death if their demands were not met besides holding protests outside the Governor’s House in Karachi.
A group of activists of Thar Mazloom Ittehad and Meghwar Students Welfare Association had staged a token hunger strike outside the local press club on Saturday.
They were protesting against the rigging in the general elections in Tharparkar district and the alleged inhuman excesses unleashed by the Arbabs against the Thari people.
Talking to newsmen, representatives of the protesters, including Amar Giruro and Behlam, accused some Meghwars of supporting the Arbabs for monetary gains, saying that the Arbabs had, in fact, unleashed a reign of terror against people belonging to minorities and the poor Thari people.
They said that hundreds of people had been falsely implicated in fake cases and many government servants, who did not support the Arbabs, had been transferred.
They urged the authorities to institute an inquiry against the district police officer besides calling for putting an immediate stop to the victimisation of the poor people.
The protestors also stressed on the need for holding fresh polls in Tharparkar district.
MINORITY COUNCILLORS: The two minority councillors from Latifabad continued their token hunger strike outside the Hyderabad Press Club for the second consecutive day on Saturday.
Boota Imtiaz Masih of UC-6 and Pervez Barkat Masih of UC-2 were protesting against the authorities’ negligence towards the colonies of the minorities.
They told newsmen that no development work had been carried out in the Christian colonies and even drinking water was unavailable there.
They urged the Sindh Governor, the district Nazim and the DCO, Hyderabad, and Taluka Nazim, Latifabad, to initiate development work in the minorities’ colonies.
