NEW DELHI: A speeding bus toppled off a bridge in southern India, bursting into flames and killing 21 passengers, police said.
Villagers helped police put out the fire before pulling the charred bodies from the wreckage before dawn on Wednesday.
Only two people including the driver survived the accident. It happened just before midnight when the bus tried to overtake a truck and flipped over the bridge into a dry gully in Avallur village of Tamil Nadu state.
Police inspector Michael, who uses only one name, said the driver would be charged with negligent driving.
Police figures show India has the world's highest road death toll, with more than 110,000 people dying each year in accidents commonly caused by speeding, overcrowding and poor vehicle and road maintenance.
