LAHORE, Oct 19: Only three parties of the 12 in the National Alliance and the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal have given better performance in the Punjab and the NWFP in the general election.

They are: the Millat Party of Farooq Leghari, the JUI-F of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the Jamaat-i-Islami of Qazi Husain Ahmad.

The remaining components of the two alliances have either won no seat or their number is negligible.

The National Alliance won seven national and 12 provincial seats in the Punjab, all of them by the Millat Party nominees.

This was the first election contested by the party launched by Mr Leghari after resigning as the head of state as a result of differences with the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Most of the winners belong to Dera Ghazi Khan division and Khushab districts.

The MMA gave an unbelievable performance in the NWFP and Balochistan, but got only a few seats in the Punjab.

According to results, the MMA got five NA and nine provincial seats in the country’s biggest province. In the Punjab, the Jamaat-i-Islami performed better than other components of the conglomerate.

The five NA seats won by the MMA include a seat won by the Jamaat candidate who had contested as an independent against the PML-QA president in Lahore.

Two other NA seats won by the Jamaat are also in Lahore.

The provincial seats won by the Jamaat are in Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Layyah, Bahawalpur and Lahore.

A JUI candidate won a National Assembly seat in Gujranwala.

The JUP and the Tehrik-i-Islami have won one provincial seat each in the Punjab.

In the NWFP, the MMA won 29 of the 35 National Assembly seats, with the JUI-F emerging as the biggest party getting 15 seats.

The Jamaat-i-Islami and the JUI-S got 12 and two seats, respectively.

The performance of the religious parties on provincial seats was equally good.

Of the 99 provincial seats, the MMA won 48.

The JUI-F nominees won 27 seats, followed by 19 of the Jamaat-i-Islami and two of the JUI-S.
