QUETTA, Oct 17: The JUI chief and a central leader of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has said the new parliament would discuss the constitutional amendments made by President Musharraf and retain those found in the national interest.

This he said while talking to newsmen after his arrival here on Thursday. He said the MMA was firm on its stance that an individual had no right to make any amendment to the Constitution. It was the sole prerogative of the elected representatives of the people to do so.

“A full debate would be held in the new parliament on these amendments and if some of them were found in the people’s interest, these would be adopted,” Maulana Fazlur Rehman said.

He said that changes would be made in the constitutional amendments if they were adopted. However, those found against the spirit of the Constitution and democracy would be abolished.

The Maulana, nominated for PM’s slot by the MMA, said the alliance would not pursue a policy of confrontation with President Musharraf.

He said the politicians believed in strong Federation and did not want any confrontation with the Centre.

He strongly reacted over remarks by some political parties that the ISI played a part in cobbling together the MMA and helped in the election of its candidates.
