Top seeds enter semifinals

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: Top seed Aqeel Khan, Asim Shafik, Nomi Qamar and Rashid Malik checked into the semifinals of the Federal Cup Tennis Championship Thursday at the Islamabad Club.

Aqeel was made to toil by upcoming junior Shahzad Khan of Faisalabad in well-contested match before winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Second seed Asim Shafik outplayed former Davis Cup player Hameedul Haq 6-3, 6-3 while Rashid Malik another veteran knocked out Inam Gul 6-1, 7-5. Nomi Qamar, had an easy passage through, eliminating Aurangzeb Khan 6-1, 6-4.

Men’s singles quarterfinals: Aqeel Khan bt Shahzad Khan 4-6, 6-2, 6-3; Rashid Malik bt Inam Gul 6-1, 7-5; Nomi Qamar bt Aurangzeb Khan 6-1, 6-4; Asim Shafik bt Hameedul Haq 6-3, 6-3.

Ladies singles quarterfinals: Mariam Rahim bt Seher Khawaja 6-1, 6-0; Nosheen Ehtisham bt Muneezah Shahid 6-0, 6-0; Sylvia Lokollo bt Nida Rahim 6-0, 6-0; Mehvish Chishtie bt Maira Rahim 6-1, 6-2.

Boys under-18 quarterfinals: Munir Ashiq bt Omer Babar 6-3, 6-3; Babar Ali Khan bt Aftab Anwar 6-3, 6-0; Shahid Afridi bt Amir Ali Khan 6-1, 6-1; Tanvir Ashiq bt Adil Murtaza 6-1, 6-2.

Boys under-14 semi-finals: Omer Babar bt Tanvir Ashiq 4-2, 3- 5, 4-2; M. Ahmed Aslam bt Amir Ali Khan 5-4, 4-5, 5-3.

Boys under-12 quarterfinals: Tabish Raza bt Salman Shahid 4- 0, 4-1; Zain Haider bt Osama Ch 4-2, 4-1; Ibrahim Omer bt Faqiue Sohail 4-1, 4-1; Abid Ali bt Yousaf Ajam 4-1, 4-2.

Girls under-14 semifinals: Sara Mansoor bt Natasha Afridi 4- 0, 5-3; Anoosha Aslam bt Sarah Mahboob 2-4, 5-4, 4-2.

Men’s doubles quarterfinals: Nomi Qamar-Aurangzeb Khan bt Hameedul Haq-Dilawar Abbas 6-2, 6-1; Rashid Malik-Aqeel Khan bt Pervez Khan-Waheed Anwar 7-5, 6-1.

Veterans 50 and above doubles: Iftikhar Rashid-M. Sher Khan walkover Farooqullah-Muhammad Khaliq; Tahawar Ali-Pervez bt Dilawar Abbas-Rashid 6-2, 6-2.
