‘No salary, no work’

Published October 18, 2002

FAISALABAD, Oct 17: Teachers of municipal schools continued their protest on the second successive day against non-payment of their salaries for the last four months.

The teachers staged a sit-in in front of the Tehsil Municipal Administration offices and chanted slogans against city tehsil Nazim Mumtaz Ali Cheema, district Nazim Zahid Nazir and other government high ups. They demanded immediate payment of their salaries and other benefits.

Their leaders told them that due to the government’s indifferent attitude they were left with no option but to strike for the acceptance of their demands.

They said the staff of the defunct FMC schools had been put at the disposal of the district government. The TMA had failed to transfer funds for payment of their salaries and other benefits.

They claimed that the TMA and district government were forcing the teachers to resign so that fresh appointments could be made on contract.

They said the TMA education branch had become paralyzed as the authorities concerned failed to shift teachers’ record pertaining to their service, accounts, salaries, etc., as a result of which they have been facing innumerable problems.— Staff Correspondent
