LAHORE, Oct 17: The PPP legislators-elect and other office-bearers on Thursday renewed their pledge to continue their struggle for the restoration of the 1973 Constitution.
Through a resolution adopted unanimously at a meeting presided over by Makhdoom Amin Fahim, they were all praise for Benazir Bhutto for her capabilities and vision. They also reiterated their confidence in her leadership.
The resolution had been moved by provincial president Qasim Zia, who has also been elected as a member of the Punjab Assembly.
Party’s acting secretary-general Raza Rabbani said there was no shift in the party stand on the status of the Legal Framework Order or the constitutional amendments made during the past three years.
Oath to the new legislators would be administered under the 1973 Constitution and this settled issue should not be made controversial, he added.
The party, he said, would contact all other parties having representation in parliament, to form government. But their cooperation would not be sought at the cost of party principles, he emphasized.
He held out an assurance that the PPP would respect the people’s mandate and would come up to the expectations of the electorate. In case the party failed to do so, he warned, the masses would not elect the PPP in the next elections.
The Makhdoom said his party condemned rigging of elections and would continue to slate it in the future.
Aitzaz Ahsan, Faisal Saleh Hayat, Dr Sher Afgan, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Naveed Chaudhry, Altaf Qureshi, Munawwar Anjum, Tariq Bashir Cheema and Iqbal Sialvi were also present on the occasion.
