PTCL employees continue strike

GUJRANWALA, Oct 14: The PTCL employees continued their strike for the fifth day on Monday.

They are protesting against the arrest of Gujranwala Telecom Region (GTR) general manager Muhammad Anwar on the orders of a returning officer.

The employees held a demonstration in front of the central telephone exchange on GT Road. They were carrying banners and placards and chanting slogans against police and returning officer. They demanded that returning officer should be taken to task and case registered against the GM be withdrawn.

The office-bearers of the PTCL Labour Alliance and the Line Staff Union announced that two hours token strike would be observed from 9 am to 11 am daily throughout the region. The PTCL employees and line staff would also hold demonstration outside each telephone exchange.

Meanwhile, the employees action body refused to end the protest on the appeal of a three-member committee constituted by the PTCL chairman.

PTCL’s Lahore director-general Ikram Khan, member (operations) Capt Mazhar Hussain (retired) and chief engineer Muhammad Sohail constitute the committee.

The PTCL union leaders informed the committee members that they would continue protest till the acceptance of their demands. They said that the GM was humiliated and handcuffed in court by returning officer Jamshad Hasan on charge of not providing him his office for polling.

KILLED: A farmer died when he was struck by lightning in Dhella Chatha Alipur Chatha on Sunday night.

According to reports, Muhammad Ashfaq Awan was working in his fields during light rain when he was struck by lightning. He died on the spot.

He was the father of seven.

The residents of village removed the body to the Alipur Chatha civil hospital for autopsy.
