LAHORE, Oct 13: District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood has claimed that the district has become polio free and no incidence of the disease had been reported from anywhere during the past two years.
Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony of a baby show held at the Children’s Hospital, Ferozepur Road, the Nazim said that the incidence of polio had been controlled as a result of regular vaccination campaigns by the government and creation of awareness about the nature of the disease among the people.
He said that the infants and young children required special healthcare to facilitate their growth into healthy adults.
Child specialist Dr. Durafshan Agha said that a combined vaccine had been developed for the prevention of hapatitits, polio and whopping cough.
She said that the hospital had also established a special ward for the children suffering from “sokra” (weakness).
The patients were administered a special semi-solid diet which controlled the disease in six weaks and the children started gaining weight. — Reporter
