HYDERABAD, Oct 13: The secretary for irrigation and power, Sindh, Mohammad Hashim Laghari, has directed officials of the two departments to chalk out a contingency plan for the Rabi season, keeping in view the expected shortage of water supply.

He was talking to the officials and engineers of irrigation and power departments at the irrigation rest house, Jamshoro, on Saturday.

He also constituted a committee which will have to maintain a close coordination with growers to motivate them to use water efficiently and cultivate those crops which required less water.

The committee, comprising the Sindh secretary for irrigation and power, additional secretary for irrigation, additional secretary for agriculture, chief engineers of the irrigation department, director-general of the agriculture extension and the director-general of the agriculture engineering and water management, will also have to prepare a share list for distribution of irrigation water in different command areas.

Laghari said it had been decided to use less water in Sindh during October to save maximum water for the Rabi season and increase water supply in November for the sowing of crops.

He informed there would be 34 per cent shortage of irrigation water during the Rabi season and advised growers to make efforts to check wastage of water.

He said 50 per cent wastage of irrigation water could be checked if latest technical methods were adopted and added Sindh would have a record produce if water was used efficiently.

Talking to teachers and under-training line superintendents during his visit to Hesco’s regional training centre, Jamshoro, the other day, Majeed said the courses being taught at the centre and the equipment should be updated to improve the efficiency of the trainees in the field.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief executive, Hesco, Brig Tariq Arshad, said corrupt staff of the company would either have to leave the department or change their attitude.
