Indian shelling kills two in AJK

MUZAFFARABAD, Oct 10: Two people were killed and at least 16 others, including four women, injured in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday in the Indian shelling from across the Line of Control, officials said.

Police Superintendent Raja Ghulam Sarwar told Dawn that the shelling had begun in the Leepa valley, some 100km southeast of here, without any provocation at about 1:30pm.

Indian troops, he said, had used mortars and medium artillery.

Siraj Deen, son of Imam Deen, was killed and his wife Nazima, son Manzoor and daughters Sajida and Fauzia were injured in Mandal village. In the nearby Tilawari village, Mohammad Yaqoob, son of Fateh Mohammad, was also killed and seven others identified as Abid, Ishfaq, Amir, Ghulam Hussain, Yaqub, Mir Mohammad Khan and Patchi Begum were injured. Basharat and Nazir were injured in Ghaipura Bijildhar, respectively, the SP said.
