LONDON: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard faces a four-week injury lay-off after undergoing surgery on a groin problem, the Premier League club confirmed Friday.

Gerrard, who missed Thursday's Europa League defeat against Braga, will now miss around four of Liverpool's remaining league fixtures and is also out of England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on March 26.

“LFC can today confirm that Steven Gerrard has undergone successful surgery on his groin and will be out for up to four weeks,” a Liverpool statement confirmed.

“The decision was made following consultation with a specialist.”

Gerrard has had niggling problems with his groin throughout his career, most notably in 2002, when he was forced to withdraw from England's World Cup squad over the problem.
